This dense pyramidal conifer with feathery branchlets tipped with gold is not a cypress at all and is better called a false-cypress. Like other false cypress it prefers humid areas so is a treasure for those living in the mid- to upper Southeast. It is especially attractive in the winter garden where its gold color brings a sunny glow to an otherwise gray landscape. A slow-growing dwarf, it needs a couple of decades to reach 8-10 feet but may eventually reach 30 feet. It rarely needs pruning.
