This hosta and Japanese maple combination is lovely for a partially shady spot that depends upon foliage. It combines a contrast in color with a contrast in texture for a long season display. The purple leaves of Japanese maple ‘Tamukeyama’ standout against the rich green leaves of Hosta ‘Royal Standard beginning in spring and going on through the summer. In fall the color of the leaves of Japanese maple ‘Tamukeyama’ turn brighter red and provide a complementary color contrast. Throughout the season the finely dissected leaves of Japanese maple ‘Tamukeyama’ provde textural interest with the bold, coarse leaves of Hosta “Royal Standard. The mound form of hosta ‘Royal Standard’ echoes the semi-weeping/cascading habit of Japanese Maple ‘Tamukeyama’ to provide harmony to this combination. As a bonus, hosta ‘Royal Standard’ sends up tall scapes bearing fragrant white flowers in mid- to late summer. Grow in a part shade in medium moist, well-drained soil.
Hosta’ Royal Standard’
This medium sized hosta grows into a wide mound about two feet high. The corrugated leaves are nine inches long by 5 inches wide and develop a yellow green color when grown in enough sun. The flowers are tubular and borne on scapes more than a foot above the foliage. Slugs can be a problem.

Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum var. dissectum’Tamukeyama’
The finely cut leaves of this heirloom cultivar hold their purple-red color well making it especially valuable for this combination. The tree is slow growing and has burgundy twigs and young branches. In spring before the foliage leafs out, small reddish flowers are produced and are followed by samaras that ripen in late summer to early fall.
