Located on 160 acres, Descanso includes forests, streams, a lake, and a bird sanctuary. The 20 acres if the camellia forest boasts 34,000 camellias representing 700 camellia taxa growing in the shade of oaks.
Five acres are devoted to roses and includes species, old garden and modern roses arranged in theme gardens with companion plants that do well in the Southern Californian climate. The eight acre California Garden features plants that are at home in the area such as California poppies, Matilija poppies, and manzanitas.
In the bird observation area you may see some of the 150 bird species that inhabit the gardens a well as other wildlife native to the area. An extensive pond area is under construction.
Open 9-5 every day except Christmas. Admission is $8 but parking is free.
