Hostas come in many shades of green, blue, white, yellow and blends of these. ‘First Frost’ combines them all with blue-green leaves edged with gold that turns white later in the season. The lovely color combination is complemented by a heavy substance that makes the leaves more attractive to you and me but less attractive to snails and slugs. It is a sport of Hosta ‘Halcyon, an old favorite with frosty-blue heavy foliage but no variegation. The lavender flowers are borne on 28” spikes in midsummer. ‘First Frost was voted ‘Hosta of the Year” for 2010 by the American Hosta Growers.
