Named for the summer house of Empress Josephine, this rose bears its flowers singly or in small clusters. Each flower has soft pink flowers that are creamy white at the edges
and are cupped when they first open but become flat as mature. They are full of petals and are quartered and quilled. The petals are soft and are easily damaged in wet weather; buds often fail to open and ball. The plants are compact and bushy with large glossy leaves that are susceptible to mildew and blackspot is cool damp climates. Bushes are not vigorous and need several years with minimal prunnng to become established. Four outstanding sports have sprung from Souvenir de la Malmaisson: ‘Leweson Gower’ (mid pink), ‘Kronprinzessin Viktoria’ (white), Souvenir de St. Anne’s (semidouble white), and ‘Climbing Souvenir de la Malmaison.
