Lulu Delacre’s book, Cool Green: Amazing, Remarkable Trees, is a tribute to the diversity of the world of trees. Written for children 4-8 in grades preschool to three, Cool Green focuses on 10 unique trees from the General Sherman sequoia in California to the Wollemi pine native to Australia. A poetic text and beautiful artwork enhance the work and help to produce an appreciate of the interconnectedness of all living things and the importance of preserving our natural heritage.

The story line is about a Latino landscaper who shares his love for trees with his granddaughter as he answers the question “Why am I in awe of trees?” He takes her on a virtual tour to places all over the world and describes some of the unique trees that grow there. He tells his granddaughter about the history of the trees, their unusual characteristics, and their relationship with other plants and animals. One of the most fascinating trees is the baobab, an upside down tree with a spongy trunk, that for one night in the summer produces hanging white bells laden with a sweet-sour scent that lure bats. Delacre also explores the unique qualities of mother trees and their intimate relationship with the fungal filaments of mushrooms. An end section includes more information on the trees, a glossary, and list resources.

Cool Green itself is as unique a book as the trees it describes in its illustrations and text. The illustrations feature rich colors and include detailed images of leaves and seeds. The text combines scientific knowledge with expressive and lyrical language that conveys the awe the grandfather (and author) has for his subject matter. It includes Spanish words and phrases, just as if the grandfather was actually talking to his granddaughter. A lovely book in all ways and sure to inspire a love and sense of wonderment in readers.
