There is something enchanting about miniature scenes and Janit Calvo’s book, Gardening in Miniature, allows you to experience that enchantment with gardens. Her book provides guidance on all aspects of the hobby from designing to buying plants, planting and maintaining a diminutive living landscape. Information on such essentials as containers, scale, sizing, soil, light, water, and plants lead to detailed discussion about the additions such as patios, pathways, water features, and accessories. A whole chapter is devoted to projects with detailed instructions for creating your own little world. The colorful, captioned pictures are abundant throughout the text and provide instruction as well as inspiration.
The most helpful information is on the plants suitable for miniature gardens. Calvo introduces plants from conifers and deciduous trees to shrubs, and annuals and perennials, with a focus on those that grow slowly and stay small. She includes a list of over 55 trees, shrubs, and bedding plants suitable for miniatures gardens, grouped by light requirements.
If you are looking for a book to start your adventure in creating miniature gardens, Calvo’s book offers a lot of inspiration as well as general advice and tips for beginning. It may be especially valuable for people with limited space or mobility but with a love of gardening. A fundamental knowledge of gardening would be a plus as the book does not cover the basics in depth. (And just for the record, even the font size is miniature lol).
