Mirka Hokkanen explores the coming of spring and the lifecycle of seeds in her book, Little Seasons Spring Seeds. Written for children ages 2-6, the author shows the great diversity of seeds, the conditions that cause seeds to grow, and how they grow into plants. A charming narrative full of fun puns and clever word-play combined with delightful illustrations create an appealing, informative book that celebrates nature and the interconnectedness of the natural world.
The opening page shows several different kinds of seeds as they nap on the ground during winter. One is snoring, another is grumbling about being awakened by a full grown carrot. The following pages show the seeds sprouting roots as spring rain wet the soil and sprouting leaves that soak up energy from the sun. Ultimately the various seeds form very different plants that produce diverse fruits with seeds that vary as much as the plants and fruits that form them. When the seeds find out that sometimes they are eaten rather than planted, they are shocked but are comforted by the fact that they are really important either way. Back pages summarize the seed lifecycle, explain the requirements of plant grown, describe the anatomy of a seed, and provide instructions for hands-on activities using seeds.
The story line is endearing but the charming illustrations steal the show. The maple seed about to parachute with its samara, the peas just hanging with their “poddies”, and the beet being tickled by a worm add a warm, intimate note to the text. Each seed or fruit is an active participant in the story which helps to engage the reader and adds to the fun. Even the front pages are filled with expressive, friendly seeds welcoming you into their story. This author and her book are outstanding!
