Laura K. Zimmermann’s book, Mushroom Rain, introduces young children to the life cycle of mushrooms. Using short lyrical sentences she begins with the sudden appearance of of mushrooms and follows through describing the various forms of mushrooms, their scents, the hazards they face, and their sudden disappearance from the landscape. She then describes their hidden form, the production of spores, and their reappearance. My favorite part is the two page spread showing a turtle chomping, a snail scraping, a mouse gnawing, and grubs burrowing in mushrooms. Bold, vibrant, dramatic illustrations enhance the text.
Written for children in preschool and kindergarten this is a delightful read aloud book that can be enjoyed by adults as well as young children. The “story” is very simple and short but more information, activities and directions for a project can be found in the end pages. Good choice for exciting young children about mushrooms they may see in their own environment.
