Self-Love Potions by Cosmicvaleria (aka Valeria Kapusta) is a collection of herbal rituals and recipes aimed at enhancing one’s own happiness. Described as a witch and herbalist, the author brings magic and self-care together in order to reconnect with the energy of the Moon, and celebrate the Divine Feminine that lives in every woman. To her, a true self-love potion or ritual could be many things but has to start with the decision to carve out some time for one’s self.

Cosmicvaleria divides her love potions into three groups: 1. kitchen spells 2. water rituals and 3. home and body rituals. The 28 kitchen spells range from “elderflower popsicles for emotional healing” to “honey-fermented garlic to ward off evil spirits”, while the 25 water rituals include a “dandelion bath for inner joy” and a “hibiscus bath for clairvoyance”. The 21 home and body rituals offer directions for potions like “daisy salve to soothe a bruised heart” and “edible strawberry scrub to invoke the goddess”. A full page is devoted to each potion and includes background material on the potion, a list of ingredients and equipment, and step by step direction for completing the ritual. Tidbits about the herb or ritual are presented in a small inset. A short encyclopedia of ingredients, reading list, and index conclude the work.

Just looking at the pictures in the book brings a sense of calm to the reader, which is further enhanced by the slow, soothing style of the text. The author tries to anticipate problems so as to solve them quickly and empathizes with the common problems the various potions address. She writes as though she is speaking to the reader as a friend and confident which strengthens the goal of self-love. Too bad that the print is very difficult to read because of its tiny size and lack of contrast with the paper on which it is written.
